Youth Work Northern Ireland

Youth Workers discussing their youth work in the North of Ireland

Hi All,

Just want to gauge your opinions regarding young people and drugs.

Myself and several youth workers have had discussions regarding the type and level of drugs that are now available to young people in our communities.

Although drugs is not a new issue what is becoming clear is the increase in harder drugs like Heroin that is readily available to our your people.

Northern Ireland has, in comparison to other areas like Dublin, Glasgow or Manchester, been relatively untouched however this is not to state this is not going to be the case in the near future. What we would like to know is what strategies do people have in place, if any, and would people, i.e. youth workers be interested in meeting to explore possibilities of early intervention, maybe meet with youth workers from Dublin who deal with this daily and hopefully learn from their experience.

All opinions and ideas are welcome as this is in its early stages of discussion.

Lets act before its too late as we are agents of social change.

Hi Josie,
I took on abit of voluntary work at the request of the community, with a group of young males from Longlands in North Belfast, the main issue was drugs, and I will hunt out the report that was compiled. We named the intervention The Yarn (young adults resolution Now) I would be totally up for this debate, cheers sean
