Tell us a little about yourself
Born in Derry/Londonderry/Doire/Doire Calgach/The Maiden City/The Walled City/Stroke City (you take your pick!) in 1971, I am a handsome, witty, charming, good looking and intelligent youth worker with a great personality (well my mother and ex-wife think so-only thing they ever agreed on!!) who also happens to be the proud father of nine children....ok, only joking.....three children - Michaela, Laya and Josh and have been involved in Youth Work full-time since leaving school in May 1987.

During that time I have strived to save mankind from imploding by working for a vast array of organisations across both statutory and voluntary sectors in diverse areas such as Education Welfare, Volunteering, Reconciliation, Conflict Management & Resolution, Community Relations, Mentoring, Street Work, Research, Participation and Rural Work. I was also a member of the Youth Council for Northern Ireland between 2000 and 2003 (do I get extra brownie points for this????)

I am also a freelance trainer and have worked for a number of organisations ‘at home’ (Coleraine Youth Forum, Co-Operation North/Ireland, Warrington Project, NUS/USI and Foyle Youth Institute) and ‘abroad’ (Leargas, Anna Lindh Foundation, Viennese Association of Youth Clubs, ELT, Klick e.V and International Youth Institute Programme). I have co-ordinated, hosted, co/facilitated, and/or participated in more than 50 international programmes since 1998 working with partner organisations in more than 20 countries. I am also registered trainer with SALTO - www.salto.org/fergalbarr

I was educated at St. Brigid’s College, Derry and at the University of Ulster (Jordanstown and Coleraine) and have Diplomas in Youth Work and Management and a Masters in Education. I'm hoping to commence a PhD in 2009 (if I can ever get my proposal right!)

I'm a (sometimes suffering) life-long Liverpool supporter and my interests include football (best unpaid, uncapped, unemployed right-back that never played for Liverpool), music, travel, video-production and sarcasm!

My claims to fame include undertaking a solo-fundraising walk the length of Ireland (well Derry to Limerick) in 1988 (fund-raising disaster more like-you can't seriously contemplate knocking on people's doors when walking 23 miles a day and carrying a rucksack on yer back! Mind you I got a good tan....), making legal history in Northern Ireland in 2001 by single-handedly changing Employment Law at an Industrial Tribunal and (and along with Jim Woods of VSB fame) meeting Tony Blair, John Major, Mary Robinson and Prince Charles during a 15 minute 'loitering exercise' at St. James' Palace years ago when working with the Princes Trust. I've also had my hands on the FA and UEFA Cups.

I just recently published, The Things People Say, Political Quotations from the Northern Ireland Peace Process in 2008. http://www.trafford.com/07-2815 ISBN 1-4251-6179-0. Only a tenner so do please go ahead and buy one....will make a great xmas gift!

New book out if anyone is in the slightest bit interested....'The Yet Unkjnown Little Brown Book' is a personal collection of poems....here are the links for it...http://www.xlibrispublishing.co.uk/bookstore/bookdisplay.aspx?booki... .... or for those outside the UK you can order it on amazon...http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbook...

hi Fergal,

Are you the one responsible for group mailouts? I may have one or two things that i would like to publise to youth workers across ni next week. should i sent it directly to you?

On another note in the same vain, I'm now working at the Red Cross delivering Humanitarian Education to educators. We want to do a bit of "research" (just me, with a pen and paper) to see what current training exists for youth worker to eplore global issues with young people.

My understanding is that Internation youth work, is more about working with and partnering with orgs from other nations. But is there opportunities to support the exploration of issues pre departure.

If you think this would fit into what you do, would be good to get a chat with you on the phone. My number is 9073 5360.

Thanks

Ellen
